In Mexico, 90% of raw material comes from recycled paper and cardboard

Mexico is the fourth recycling country in the world for paper and cardboard

90% of raw material used to make paper in Mexico through recycling in production processes, members of the Paper Chamber have managed to avoid the emission of 15.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually. According to the study "Carbon Footprint of the Pulp and Paper Industries in Mexico" presented within the International Day Against Climate Change framework.

The study conducted by the Paper Chamber collected data of all the companies in the sector and developed by the Center for Life Cycle Analysis and Sustainable Design (CADIS). The companies'' progress and commitment contribute to the care and preservation of the environment by developing the Circular Economic Model with an investment of more than 1,000 million dollars in infrastructure and with disused paper and cardboard.

Among the most outstanding results of the study "Carbon Footprint of the Pulp and Paper Industries in Mexico" are:

- Each ton of paper recycled is equivalent to saving between 17 and 19 trees, saving 20,000 liters of water, and avoiding 2.5 cubic meters of occupation in sanitary landfills

- Six million tons of disused paper and cardboard recycled per year; 100% of the wastewater treated and reused, and there are highly energy-efficient systems.

- The magnitude of the emissions avoided and captured is greater than the paper industry''s carbon footprint, thus preventing the emission of 15.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually, thanks to the collection of 54% of disused paper and cardboard.

- A stunning highlight is that, if the maximum recycling of paper and cardboard is achieved in Mexico, adding the development of commercial forest plantations, the emission of 23.2 million tons of CO2 could be avoided and captured. This is equivalent to 10% of the country-commitment that Mexico acquired during COP21, consisting of reducing 210 million tons of CO2 by 2030.

- Mexico is the 4th paper recycling country in the world. Thanks to the industry''s efforts, its installed capacity to recover paper and cardboard once its useful life is over, as well as the participation of society in general, converting in addition to the Paper Industry in the largest circular economy in Mexico.

Mexico consolidates itself as a worldwide reference in sustainable practices. Every person who uses paper and cardboard in their daily lives has the security to contribute to the care of natural resources by occupying them. For the most part, the products will have a new useful life when recycled.
